It seems there is very little that can stop Argo from taking the Oscar Best Picture at this point and while many will point to exceptions when a film won so many precursor awards only to not go on to win the Oscar (Apollo 13 being the chief example), you’re going to need more than one outlier year to convince me.
Tonight Argo won for Best Ensemble at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards and the route appears to be on. Lincoln did gain a little ground with Tommy Lee Jones finally taking home a Supporting Actor award, which greatly improves his chances at the Oscars. The win for Jones and the obvious win for Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor does show Lincoln isn’t out of it entirely, but the hill has gotten extremely steep at this point.
Silver Linings Playbook needed a couple of big wins to secure its place among the top three, but it couldn’t pull it off. Jennifer Lawrence certainly proved she’s the front-runner over Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) with her win, but Jones besting De Niro for Supporting and Argo taking Best Ensemble cancelled out its Best Picture chances.
Then there was Anne Hathaway, winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Les Miserables, the other Oscar guarantee alongside Day-Lewis.
