Friday Box-Office: ‘The Hobbit’ #1, ‘Django’ and ‘Les Mis’ a Close Second and ‘Zero Dark’ Dominating Limited Release

Those 3-D dollars are certainly keeping The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey out in front of newcomers Django Unchained and Les Miserables, but is there any chance the scorching spaghetti western or hot musical could overtake the Hobbitses for #1?

Friday numbers place The Hobbit in first with $10.7 million, up 6% from the same day last weekend which resulted in a $36.9 million three-day so there’s no reason not to expect the same result this time around, if not higher.

However, The Hobbit does now face competition beyond the fact it has been in theaters for two weeks already. Django Unchained is on its way to potentially becoming Quentin Tarantino‘s highest grossing film to date as it brought in $9.7 million on Friday, followed closely by Les Miserables with $9.4 million. While I teased the potential of either of the films overtaking Hobbit for #1 in my lede, I don’t see that as much of a possibility as the two will battle for second around $30 million, which is still impressive nonetheless.

Additional newcomer this week, Parental Guidance, which has trailers telling me it is the “best family film of the year” (whatever that means), scored $5.1 million on Friday and will likely finish the weekend around $16m.

Meanwhile, Judd Apatow‘s This is 40 comes in with $4.1m and The Guilt Trip starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand lands a soft $2.1 million.

Silver Linings Playbook expanded to 745 theaters this weekend but has so far only managed $1.2 million and will need some help cracking the top ten.

In limited release, Zero Dark Thirty is still only playing in five theaters and still racking up the dough, bringing in $94,100 on Friday bring its cume to $1.1 million and it should be over $1.4 million by the end of the weekend after only 12 days in only five theaters.

I have included Friday’s top ten directly below and will be back on Sunday morning with a complete wrap-up.
