Friday Box-Office: ‘Skyfall’ Tops ‘Twilight’ and ‘Lincoln’ to Start Final Weekend Before the Holiday Rush

Skyfall posterThis weekend’s box-office is a bit of a snoozer leading up to next weekend’s fireworks once The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will make a run for I Am Legend‘s December opening weekend record of $77.2 million. For that matter, I wonder if the top twelve this weekend will be able to even generate that much.

Kicking off on Friday, Skyfall topped The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which barely topped Lincoln and any one of the three, or perhaps even Rise of the Guardians or Life of Pi could still top the weekend depending on whether or not any of them see a mad rush to the ticket counter over Saturday and Sunday.

All the way down in sixth place is the week’s only new release in the Gerard Butler-led Playing for Keeps, a film neither Butler nor co-stars Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman and Catherine Zeta-Jones were able to encourage many audience members to go see as it brought in an estimated $2.1 million.

Otherwise, the numbers speak for themselves. I’ll dig into this weekend a lot further tomorrow morning where it looks like whatever film crosses $9 million first wins, but that may even be aiming too high. For now, here’s a look at the Friday top ten.

  1. Skyfall – $3.1 million
  2. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 – $2.8 million
  3. Lincoln – $2.5 million
  4. Rise of the Guardian – $2.2 million
  5. Life of Pi – $2.2 million
  6. Playing for Keeps – $2.1 million
  7. Red Dawn – $1.3 million
  8. Wreck-It Ralph – $1.1 million
  9. Flight – $910,000
  10. Killing Them Softly – $890,000
