Anti-Obama Documentary Opens Strong While ‘Expendables 2’ Holds and ‘Hit & Run’ Crashes and Burns

When Laremy was putting together 2016: Obama’s America would be able to make the top ten. I think he came to the conclusion that, with the film only opening in 1,091 theaters, it would result in an 11th place finish, but it seems there are a few more interested in what the doc has to say than that.

While it will certainly slide down the ranks by Sunday, 2016: Obama’s America opened with $2.2 million on Friday, enough for a top ten placement at the moment. It will likely finish the weekend around $4.2 million, unable to sustain such numbers over the course of the three-day as this was clearly the Friday date night movie of choice for those hotly anticipating the Republican National Convention this coming August 27-30.

In first is last weekend’s #1, The Expendables 2, adding an estimated $3.8 million on Frdiay and likely to finish the weekend somewhere around $10.5 million, down 63% from last weekend’s $28.5 million.

In second for a second consecutive weekend is The Bourne Legacy, which seems as if it definitely isn’t catching on as I haven’t caught a whiff of a conversation about the film after it opened on August 10. It’s likely to finish the weekend with a domestic cume somewhere around $84.5 million, but will that be enough for Universal to consider continuing the franchise?

When it comes to new releases you have to scroll down to eighth place to find your first new feature, Premium Rush, which has enjoyed pretty good reviews but only opened in 2,255 theaters. The film has so far brought in an estimated $1.9 million on Friday and will likely finish somewhere around $6 million for the weekend, though an “A-” CinemaScore could help it to a little more than that.

Laremy was very bullish with his predictions on the Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell chase comedy Hit and Run, which opened on Wednesday and expanded wide into 2,870 theaters on Friday, but boy has that thing crash and burned opening to only $1.4 million. It’s going to be lucky to crack $4 million by Sunday at this rate.

Even further down the list and outside the top ten is Warner’s The Apparition. Opening in only 810 theaters, the pic managed $1.1 million on Friday and who cares where it ends on Sunday. The film was shelved for over a year and now that it’s released I’d argue they never actually finished it. It is the worst kind of bad film, one that is just plain bad without even an inkling of trying.

I have included Friday’s estimates directly below courtesy of Box Office Mojo and I will be back on Sunday with a complete weekend wrap-up.
