When I posted the three-day box-office results on Sunday, numbers for Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom, which opened in a limited release in only four theaters, were not yet available, but now we come to learn the film has gone on to break the per theater average for a film opening in limited release.
Moonrise brought in $523,006 in three days for a $130,752 per theater average, besting the previous record for a live-action film held by Dreamgirls, which opened in three theaters back in 2006 to a $126,316 per theater average. Moonrise ended up going on to make $669,486 over the four-day holiday for a four-day, $167,371 per theater average. Amazing and well deserved for an excellent film I hope all of you will get a chance to see once it hits theaters near you.

Meanwhile, Anderson is already talking about his next film, which he recently told Bazaar, “It’s a film I want to make in Europe, a Euro movie.” Later he told Vulture his time in France and love of French films have worked their way into the latest story saying, “[It’s] a European story and it kind of [draws from] my own experience here, in the details that are finding their way into it.”
Moving forward, Anderson now tells the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles (via The Playlist), “In my next film, the main character, who’s a bit crazy, has a personal medium [mind reader] whose assistant is a teenager. I’ll give the roles to more well known actors than the kids [in Moonrise Kingdom]. I’m still attached to my favorite actors even if I still don’t know who’ll play the main role in my next film.”
Anderson already revealed he wrote the script on his own, but developed the story with a non-Hollywood friend and a mutual friend of the two served as “the inspiration for one of the main characters.” As far as who will fill these roles, so far Anderson has said there is a part for his frequent collaborator Owen Wilson, but beyond that it’s a guessing game, though I’m sure we can all expect roles for Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.
