We are less than a week away from the Thrusday, April 19 announcement of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival lineup and so far the only confirmed film is Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom, which will open the fest on May 16. As a result, we get the official French poster for the flick (via Twitch).
Moonrise Kingdom is set to hit theaters stateside shortly after its Croisette premiere on May 25 and stars Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Keitel and Bob Balaban in a story set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965 and tells the story of two twelve-year-olds (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore — and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle.
I have included the new French poster along with a batch of stills from the film to the bottom of this post, but first I thought you may be interested in knowing that Tim Roth will serve as head of the Un Certain Regard (roughly translates to A Certain Glance) jury at this year’s festival. While it’s not the big time, the Un Certain Regard selections have included the likes of Restless, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Miss Bala and Blue Valentine in the last two years and always seems to offer other curiosities worth exploring.
As for line-up speculation, some titles have been nixed entirely. We won’t be seeing Wong Kar Wai’s Grandmasters or Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, but it’s safe to assume Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love and Walter Salles’s On the Road will be among the titles selected.
I still have my fingers crossed for the likes of John Hillcoat’s Lawless, Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly and Michael Haneke’s Love and I full expect Oliver Stone’s Savages to be in the field. Other than that, I’m out of competent guesses, but I can’t wait to see what will be filling my schedule in mid-May.
Now here’s that poster and those pictures.
