Is it at all possible That’s My Boy will offer up an Adam Sandler movie we can all appreciate? I don’t like to use MPAA ratings to search for what may or may not be quality material, but the R-rating for “crude sexual content throughout, nudity, pervasive language and some drug use” tells me one thing… this isn’t Jack and Jill or Grown-Ups. At the very least there’s no holding back.
However, I still have one major concern and it’s evident right there on the front of the film’s poster… Sandler is playing some drunken fool who shows up on the eve of his son’s, Donny (Andy Samberg), wedding hoping to make up for lost time. I’m sure he’ll be an embarassment, be yelled at by Donny in some form of “I hate you speech”, come to grips with who he is, reconnect with his son and they’ll live happily ever after, but the question is whether they’ll do it in a way where the cliched nature of the story isn’t relied on too heavily in an attempt to play a bunch of sight gags and poo-poo jokes.
We can only hope.
That’s My Boy hits theaters on June 15 and along with Sandler and Samberg it stars Leighton Meester, James Caan, Robert Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) and Susan Sarandon and is directed by Sex Drive‘s Sean Anders and John Morris.
