Suffocating in Plastic… No Thanks

I saw the photo to the right from the set of Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Conversation and couldn’t help but think of one of those pieces of movie magic that always gets me. I don’t think I will ever understand how actors can allow someone to place a plastic bag over their head in a movie and imply a certain level of suffocation.

Just look at that screen capture from David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo above as Daniel Craig nearly sucks that thing down his throat. Sorry, I’m not sure I could do it regardless of the precautions and assurances I was given.

I get a similar “creep out” factor when people place guns right in front of someone’s face and pull the trigger and having it just click. “Ha, ha… no bullets.” All I can ever think about in those instances are Brandon Lee during the filming of The Crow.

Here’s one more that just makes me think, “What are you doing?” even as I watch Ben Kingsley in this scene from House of Sand and Fog using packaging tape to secure a plastic bag over his head. While I’m entirely sure there are more than enough safety measures taken to ensure he doesn’t actually suffocate, the idea alone is enough to make me cringe.
