I’m sure there are other similar posters, but the first one I think of viewing this new poster for Oliver Stone‘s upcoming film Savages is the poster for the 2006 Oscar-nominated feature Babel using the vertical title treatment and accompanying imagery from the film.
Savages was one of my early predictions for Best Picture, which would mean it would be following in Babel‘s footsteps in more ways than just marketing material.
The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010 and centers on two pals (Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch) from Laguna Beach who share the same girlfriend (Blake Lively) and a thriving business growing and distributing the best-quality pot on the planet. When they resist being muscled by a Mexican drug cartel, the girl is kidnapped and the ransom is every cent they’ve made for the last five years. They agree to pay, but hatch an alternate plan to get her back, get revenge, and then get lost.
The rest of the cast includes Salma Hayek as the leader of the cartel with Benicio del Toro as her lead henchman.
Current expectation is for the film to debut at the Cannes Film Festival after it moved release dates from September to July 6. I don’t think I really need to say it, but guess what other film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival…
