It fascinates me how quickly Drive turned Nicolas Winding Refn into a director whose work so many are looking forward to. The film to do that should have been Bronson, which should have also been the film to put Tom Hardy on the map, but such is the movie biz.
At least now people are hip to how talented Refn is and as a result, hopefully, his upcoming films will get more attention than they otherwise would have. One such upcoming feature is Only God Forgives with which he’s re-teaming with his Drive star, Ryan Gosling, and Yahoo debuted the new image from the set you see to the right of a battered and bloodied Gosling, stumbling through the foliage. How did he get that way? Well, that isn’t quite clear, but perhaps the synopsis will give you a better idea as to what to look forward to:
Julian (Gosling) is a former kickboxer and gangster living in Bangkok. When his brother is murdered by a ruthless Thai police lieutenant, Julian is forced to seek vengeance or risk his own death.
It’s a curious plot synopsis, but I have a feeling there will be a little more to the story than what we learn here, or at least a little more nuance. Along with Gosling the film co-stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Burke.
If you’re interested in a more in-depth plot description you can click here and check out the previously released first image from the film, which is expected to be released later this year by through the Weinstein Co.’s new Radius-TWC banner. No specific release dates have yet been announced.
Now, if you haven’t seen Bronson yet, or Refn’s Pusher trilogy, do yourself a favor and get acquainted with those films. They are well worth your time.
