One movie for me this week outside of the normal rotation as I took a mini-vacation over the last four days with limited work and plenty of NCAA basketball. Of course, I can’t go anywhere without movies following me and this week I caught one I had never seen.
Road House (1989)
I had never seen Road House, but it finally made it to the top of my Netflix queue and wow-of-wow is it a ridiculous, yet fun, ride. It essentially boils together every ’80s movie trope you can think of from bits of Top Gun to The Karate Kid, from Cocktail to Footloose and it almost comes across as something of an anti-Fight Club once Dalton (Patrick Swayze) goes into his rules on how he plans on fixing the Double Deuce bar. I will also never forget the moment Jimmy yells, “I used to fuck guys like you in prison,” as he holds Dalton in a headlock. Clearly it was meant to imply Dalton was something of a wimp, but I’m not entirely sure it comes off that way.
From all the crazy sideways glances, the lack of authority and the absolutely bat-shit insane finale, I have to say this is a film I enjoyed watching even though it isn’t exactly top notch cinema. I will now leave you with what I believe to be the only obvious clip to preview in this case.
That does it for me, though I may now rush off and go watch Sneakers for the first time. What did you watch this last week? Any trips to the theater?
