Gael Garcia Bernal to Play Zorro in Futuristic ‘Zorro Reborn’ Reboot

Back in April of last year the Los Angeles Times report 20th Century Fox was looking to bring back Zorro after Antonio Banderas played the character in two films for Columbia Pictures. The only thing was, this wasn’t the Zorro we’re used to. The film is titled Zorro Reborn and apparently instead of a period piece the film will remain a western, but will be set in a desolate and post-apocalyptic future with echoes of both Sergio Leone and No Country for Old Men.

At the time that news surfaced the film was expected to be directed by pre-vis specialist Rpin Suwannath (X-Men, The Matrix) with a script from Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. Now, Suwannath is no longer attached, Glenn Gers (Fracture) did a rewrite of the script and Variety reports Gael Garcia Bernal will suit up in the lead role.

Fox did not confirm the news and has no word on a potential replacement director, but it seems Bernal is poised for a major Hollywood coming out party after long being an actor known more for his international independent features such as Babel, Amores Perros, Y Tu Mamá Tambien and The Motorcycle Diaries.

Bernal will next be seen in the Will Ferrell comedy Casa de Mi Padre as well as the upcoming Kate Hudson rom-com A Little Bit of Heaven.
