It looks like I’ll be sticking with my prediction that Hugo will just barely edge out The Artist for Best Art Direction at this year’s Oscars as that is the way the Art Directors Guild (ADG) went with their awards last night where Hugo‘s production designer Dante Ferretti took home best art direction for a period film.
Also nominated for an Oscar, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 production designer Stuart Craig won for best art direction in a fantasy film while Donald Graham Burt was awarded for his work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for best art direction in a contemporary film. Burt, however, was not nominated for an Oscar.
So it becomes a three horse race at the Oscars between Hugo, The Artist and Harry Potter. Hugo and The Artist are the front-runners, but I can’t help but wonder if Craig will finally be honored for his work on the Potter franchise. And while he has three Oscars to his name for work on such films as The English Patient, Dangerous Liaisons and Gandhi, this is the fourth time he’s been nominated for his work on the Potter films and he has never won.
