Oscar Trims 2012 Visual Effects Contenders Down to Ten

The Academy just announced the final ten contenders for the Best Visual Effects category at the 2012 Oscars. Gone from the previous list of 15 are Cowboys and Aliens, Sucker Punch, Thor, Super 8 and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

I have updated my predictions for this category, but only in so far as to remove the five films above. Of my predictions none of the five films above were in my top seven and I really see nothing that would really make me want to change my mind too much. As of now my predictions for the top five look like this:

  1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  2. The Tree of Life
  3. Hugo
  4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

As far as the ten films that remain, they are as follows.

  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
  • Hugo
  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
  • Real Steel
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  • The Tree of Life
  • X-Men: First Class

You can go here to review my complete rankings for the category, but I’d be interested to see what five films you predict will make the cut as nominations for the 2012 Oscars will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, at 5:30 a.m. PT
