2012 Oscar Predictions: Massive Update Including ‘Potter,’ ‘Bridesmaids,’ McCarthy, Chastain and Nolte

Best Supporting Actor

Three major items of note in the Best Supporting Actor category begin with the fact Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) wasn’t recognized by the Broadcast Film Critics, the Hollywood Foreign Press or the Screen Actors Guild, which is to say a once-promising contender is fading fast. I haven’t dropped him entirely from my predictions, but with some major movement from a couple other contenders he could lose his place next time around.

The two biggest movies come from Jonah Hill (Moneyball) and Nick Nolte (Warrior). Between the two they both were nominated by the Screen Actors Guild while Hill was recognized by the Golden Globes and Nolte’s other nomination came from the Broadcast Film Critics. As a result, Nolte has jumped into my top five, edging out Ben Kingsley (Hugo), who, like von Sydow, also went completely unrecognized by the three orgs I mentioned.

Hill still has a bit of a climb, but he sits just outside the top five with Patton Oswalt (Young Adult), who was only nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics, missing out on a nomination by the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

I have listed my current top five directly below.

  1. Christopher Plummer (Beginners)
  2. Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn)
  3. Albert Brooks (Drive)
  4. Nick Nolte (Warrior)
  5. Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close)

Best Cinematography

And finally we come to Best Cinematography, which I hadn’t visited in some time and surprisingly only made one change to the top five, replacing J. Edgar with Robert Richardson‘s work in Hugo. I did, however, add Drive to my list of contenders after it received a nomination from the Broadcast Film Critics, though I really think the five I’ve listed below are going to be our five nominees with only The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo being all that questionable. Also, at this point, is anyone willing to bet against Emmanuel Lubezki winning for The Tree of Life?

  1. The Tree of Life (Emmanuel Lubezki)
  2. The Artist (Guillame Schiffman)
  3. War Horse (Janusz Kaminski)
  4. Hugo (Robert Richardson)
  5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Jeff Cronenweth)
