Ricky Gervais Will Host the 2012 Golden Globe Awards

Ricky Gervais to host the 2012 Golden Globe AwardsRicky Gervais, who just tweeted the picture you see to the right of him and Oscar host Billy Crystal, has been confirmed as host of the 2012 Golden Globe Awards marking the third straight year the comedian will steal the show from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

After last year’s appearance drew a bit of controversy, Gervais said he would turn down the opportunity to host for a third time, but obviously that’s not the case as the HFPA announced the news we were all honestly just waiting for confirmation on after reports last week that Gervais, Douglas Vaughn, senior vp specials at NBC, and HFPA president Aida Takla-O’Reilly sat down to chat and rumors that an official offer was made at that time.

In a curious twist, the HFPA wasn’t above noting how their entire organization was not altogether happy about the decision saying:

“While many welcome Gervais’s return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters. After the show Gervais dismissed the possibility of coming back for a third time, but he gradually warmed to the idea and last month met with HFPA President Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly in Paris to discuss it.'”

Now the question is who will Gervais target this year? Last year you had Mel Gibson, The Tourist and Tim Allen. I’m sure Lindsay Lohan will find her way into the mix, but will Gervais head hunt for Brett Ratner after his latest Oscar debacle? Who else will be in his sights?

While tweeting the image above Gervais included in the comment, “Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true).” Should be an interesting show…

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2012 and just like last year I will be here with a live blog and winners as always. If you’ve never tuned in for that, just click here to check out last year’s coverage when Gervais stole the show.
