New Pixar in 2013, Elfman Scoring ‘Hunger Games,’ Del Toro Out of ‘Hellboy 3’ and More

Welcome to the inaugural edition of my new “Movie Morsels” category. A category that will simply offer small nuggets of information on some upcoming film projects where there just isn’t enough for a full story, but there is enough information to make reporting it worthwhile.

Despite their highly publicized falling out during Spider-Man 2, where composer Danny Elfman (pictured) said, “I’d rather go back to waiting tables than to do Spider-Man 2 again,” he and director Sam Raimi will be re-teaming on Raimi’s latest film Oz, the Great and Powerful. Additionally, Elfman will be scoring The Hunger Games with Oscar winner T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart). [Movies.com]

Disney has announced an unnamed Pixar film for release on November 27, 2013. No plot details were announced other than the fact it is an original project. On a separate but semi-related topic, I saw the teaser trailer for Pixar’s Brave this weekend and it looks excellent. [Deadline]

Hellboy creator, writer and artist Mike Mignola commented on the possibility of director Guillermo del Toro returning to direct Hellboy 3 with a quote that may depress fans. Mignola said, “Last I heard he said he would not make it… In every interview there’s a new story on what his next movie is and he honestly believes he’s going to do all these things. But last I heard, he said ‘I’m never gonna get back to Hellboy.’ I’m not surprised because he won’t live long enough to do a tenth of the movies he’s told me he’s going to make. I can’t imagine him making a Hellboy 3.” [The Daily Blam]

Speaking of del Toro, Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) is in talks to join Charlie Hunnam Pacific Rim, a monster movie expected to be del Toro’s next feature. The film takes place in a future where giant malevolent creatures threaten to destroy the world. [Variety]

Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) has been hired to direct Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, the sequel to the 2010 adaptation of Rick Riordan’s novel, for 20th Century Fox. The book centers on Percy (Logan Lerman) and his group of friends as they head to the titular sea to find the mythical Golden Fleece, as well as to free a friend who has been captured there. It’s expected, though, that the sequel will draw from other Percy Jackson titles as well as “Sea of Monsters.” [Los Angeles Times]
