UPDATED: First Still from ‘Deathly Hallows 2,’ Depp Ready for ‘Pirates 5’ and Abrams Talks ‘Star Trek 2’

UPDATE: Thanks to HPANA for the heads up on the color version of the new Harry Potter still.

It’s been a while since I did any kind of online round-up and there are a few things of note this Saturday morning as I wait for the NFL playoffs to begin and watch the latest Blu-ray of Dances with Wolves. We’ll begin with the image you see to the right, which comes from Mugglenet (with a little clean-up from yours truly) and appears to be the first new still from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

In the foreground is Matthew Lewis as Neville Longbottom in an image depicting a battle scene with Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) in the background. With the second half of the Deathly Hallows story set to hit theaters on July 15 I bet we can expect more from this film soon.

Next comes a bit of news regarding J.J. Abrams and the as yet Untitled Star Trek Sequel as he spoke with Vulture and began discussing the possibility of the sequel being shot in 3D. He said, “I have nothing against 3D in theory. But I’ve also never run to the movies because something’s in 3D. [As for Trek], as soon as I read the script, if it says, ‘Somebody pushes a weapon toward the camera in a menacing way,’ and we think, ‘That’d be better in 3D!’… I dunno.”

This comes on the heels of another interview he gave to Collider saying he hasn’t even officially signed on to direct and won’t until he’s seen a script:

“I guess the idea of not wanting to choose to direct a film, for which I’ve not read a script. It’s a tough decision to make without seeing any pages. That’s not to say that I don’t have all the faith in the world in the spectacular writers. Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are awesome. My hope is that they’ll write the script, it will be great and we can make a fun, exciting sequel to Star Trek.”

The film is already scheduled for a June 29, 2012 release.

Next, with the upcoming May 20 release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides there is already talk of a PIrates of the Caribbean 5 on the horizon.

Johnny Depp has already been quoted saying, “As long as we can put all the puzzle pieces together, I would most definitely consider it.” And it sounds like those pieces are already starting to come together as one-half of the Pirates quadrilogy scripting team, Terry Rossio, has signed on to pen the fifth film for Disney without his longtime writing partner Ted Elliott. There’s no word on why Elliott isn’t also coming back.

Finally, I leave you with the following international poster for Thor (via Slashfilm).

Thor hits theaters on May 6.
