I consider this to be pretty big news, especially for Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to The Hurt Locker as ComingSoon reports Tom Hanks is set to star in Bigelow’s Triple Frontier. There were rumors Hanks was joining the cast, but ComingSoon was able to get in touch with the film’s producer, Charles Roven, who told the site, “Tom Hanks is starring in the film and we’re still looking to cast the other roles. We’re hoping to start shooting the movie sometime in mid-March.”
Mark Boal, who penned Bigelow’s Hurt Locker, also penned Triple Frontier, which may or may not be changing its title to Sleeping Dogs. The film is set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime.
Bigelow was actually offered the director’s chair on the Untitled Spider-Man Reboot, but stuck with this picture, which the Los Angeles Times previously report as “a Spanish-language variation” of The Hurt Locker.
As for Tom Hanks, he’s currently working on his second feature directorial effort after 1996’s That Thing You Do!, Larry Crowne, which Universal will release in theaters on July 1, 2011.
