Wait a second, you mean to tell me Paul Giamatti plays an irascible and rather unlikable character in Barney’s Version? What a change from the norm! However, Giamatti is traditionally a star so I’m still interested in seeing this movie, which I unfortunately missed in Toronto two months ago. Today, the trailer arrived via Yahoo.
The film is an adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s acclaimed novel and tells the story of Barney Panofsky (Giamatti) as told from Barney’s perspective, which is to say this is “Barney’s version” of how things went down. The film spans three decades and follows Barney across two continents.
Along with Giamatti, Barney’s Version stars Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver, Rachelle Lefevre, Scott Speedman and Bruce Greenwood. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the feature and will give it a limited December release in hopes of some Oscar play, but it’s primary release will be January.
