Director Chair Battles: Aronofsky vs. Slade for ‘Wolverine 2’ and More

Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) must be extremely interested in tackling some genre work after his interest in a RoboCop reboot at MGM and now word from Mike Fleming at Deadline that he’s one of two directors currently in discussions to direct Wolverine 2 at Fox.

Fleming reports “20th Century Fox is between David Slade and Darren Aronofsky” for the Wolverine 2 gig. You surely remember Aronofsky directed Jackman in The Fountain and he’s apparently been talking with title star. Yet, Slade, who last directed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is said to have the edge. It was last reported Slade was competing with Red helmer Robert Schwentke for helming duties, but Schwentke has apparently “opted out of the competition.”

Moving on, Comic Book Movie reports Joe Carnahan (The A-Team), David Yates (Harry Potter 5-7) and James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) are all potential candidates for Fox’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

This is on top of news that Fox is interested in bringing Bruce Willis in to voice the 100% CG character, The Thing, and “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer is under consideration to play Doctor Doom, the role played by Julian McMahon in the previous film.

Switching back to the directorial front, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are reportedly trying to bring on Battle: Los Angeles helmer, Jonathan Liebesman, to direct Clash of the Titans 2, but Deadline’s Mike Fleming says the two sides “are far apart on money.”

Finally, Robert Rodriguez remains the top choice to direct Deadpool at Fox, the spin-off from X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Ryan Reynolds set to return as the wise-cracking mercenary.
