Rooney Mara to Play Lisbeth in David Fincher’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’

After months of speculation, Rooney Mara (pictured) has been announced as landing the lead role of Lisbeth Salandar in David Fincher’s American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Daniel Craig who was previously announced as having the role of Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who works with Salander to solve a 40-year-old missing person case.

When last reported we learned the role of Salandar was down to two candidates as Mara was battling it out with Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, The Uninvited) for the role with Mara securing the role.

Mara isn’t exactly a surprise candidate as her name has been among those considered all along, not to mention she has a role in Fincher’s upcoming Facebook movie The Social Network. Mara, however, is hardly a known name as her most recent roles in Youth in Revolt and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street were supporting at best, but this is a major get for an up-and-coming actress and with Fincher at the helm it is certain to gain her worldwide notice.

Both Craig and Mara are also joined by Stellan Skarsgard and Robin Wright, who were announced as in negotiations last week with Skarsgard eying the role of Martin Vanger, one of the key suspects in the unsolved murder. Wright is eying the role of Erika Berger, Blomkvist’s publisher at Millennium magazine and occasional lover.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will begin shooting next month in Sweden from a screenplay by Steve Zaillian. The film is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.
