This Weekend at the Movies: May 21, 2010

Can you believe it? I have written seven reviews in the last four days, 18 in the last nine days and yet I don’t have a review for any of this weekend’s new movies as a result of my time in Cannes. However, I promise I will be reviewing one of these when I get back as I want to see it and perhaps one other will find it’s way on the site as well.

Let’s have a look…

'MacGruber' Movie Poster
This was the one screening I was upset I missed due to my time in Cannes, and therefore it is the one film I promise I will be going to see so I can add a review to the site. I thought the idea for this movie was terrible. I hated the “Saturday Night Live” skits and thought there was no chance they could create a good movie. However, I must admit, the one trailer I saw actually looked rather funny. My fingers are crossed.

This film is rated R for strong crude and sexual content, violence, language and some nudity.
Shrek Forever After

This was the one screening I didn’t mind I missed. I loved the original Shrek, but things have gone so far downhill since then I have just lost interest. Perhaps this one is good, I may never know.

This film is rated PG for mild action, some rude humor and brief language.
Holy Rollers

I have a screener of this one back home in Seattle and had I not been preparing for Cannes on a 24/7 basis I would have found time to watch it before leaving. Unfortunately things didn’t work out, but this one could be good. I heard so-so things from a press screening prior to the Seattle Film Festival from a couple of colleagues, but I still want to give it a chance for myself.

This film is rated R for drug content and language throughout, and brief sexual material.
Solitary Man

I don’t know anything about this movie other than it stars a massive cast of names including Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito, Mary-Louise Parker, Jenna Fischer and Jesse Eisenberg and is getting a solid four theater release in New York and Hollywood. Check the trailer out below and see if it fits your needs.

This film is rated R for language and some sexual content.
