Rogue Pictures has announced the release dates for a pair of upcoming 2011 features starting with a November 11, 2011 date for Tarsem Singh’s (The Fall) new film War of the Gods, which actually seems quite redundant at the moment with the upcoming release of Clash of the Titans but with Singh’s visual acuity it makes for a film worth watching out for.
War of the Gods follows the battles waged by Theseus (Henry Cavill), a warrior from Greek mythology, who leads a fight against the imprisoned titans in a story where gods fight alongside mortals. Phaedra (Freida Pinto), an oracle priestess joins Theseus on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting. The film also stars Mickey Rourke and Kellan Lutz and was written by Charley Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides. It will be released in 3D, but there is no word on whether it will be shot in 3D or simply get the post-production 3D treatment.
It’s hard for me to believe a filmmaker of Singh’s precision would bow to the post-production conversion silliness, but Rogue is a part of Universal and most likely the big boys are calling the shots on this with little input from Singh. I saw Clash of the Titans last night in 3D and while the converted 3D didn’t bother me as much as it appears to have bothered some of the folks I follow on Twitter (it’s actually easier on my eyes it seems than actual 3D), but it’s still unnecessary and you can occasionally take the glasses off completely and only notice a little bit of fog around the edges.
The second film is Neil Burger’s (The Illusionist) The Dark Fields which is now set for a March 18, 2011 release. The film boasts an impressive cast made up of Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Abbie Cornish and centers on a down-and-out New York City writer (Cooper) who comes into possession of a designer drug that gives him new found intelligence and success. De Niro plays a brilliant financial mogul who begins pursuing Cooper’s character.
