Chris Evans Officially Cast as Captain America

Heat Vision is reporting Chris Evans has officially signed on to star in The First Avenger: Captain America in the lead role as Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, a sickly young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort.

As detailed last week Evans was offered the role but was uncertain about accepting a role that came with the commitment to star in as many as nine films after already starring as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two Fantastic Four installments.

Also, just like last week, Marvel didn’t provide comment and neither did Evans’s reps at CAA. I assume there will be an official press release or Variety/Hollywood Reporter article, and at which time I will likely just update this post as opposed to creating a whole new one unless there are certain particulars to add.

Evans beat out a fleet of names for the role that included John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Fluger, Scott Porter, Chace Crawford, Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund, Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum. Personally, sounds like solid casting to me, I’ve never had much of a problem with Evans and he was certainly the best part of both Fantastic Four movies. I think this sounds like it will pit Captain America against Green Lantern leaving the fans to decide which sarcastic superhero they like more, Evans as Captain America or Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern.

Evans joins Hugo Weaving who was previously cast as the film’s villain the Red Skull and The Wolfman helmer Joe Johnston will direct. The First Avenger: Captain America is set to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.
