Goyer Writing Superman, Rourke in ‘Conan’ and TV Stars Line-up for ‘Captain America’

David Goyer Penning Superman Reboot: It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to learn David Goyer has been brought on by Warner Bros. to script The Man of Steel considering Chris Nolan is overseeing the project and Goyer has been involved with Nolan’s Batman franchise since day one. The Man of Steel is the latest attempt to get Superman off the ground following Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns in 2006. From that film, Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer are not expected to return as the new story involves the same tired villain, Lex Luthor, going against super villain Brainiac. Word is also the Daily Planet is expected to reflect the current news environment and will be struggling due to the Internet. The following LatinoReview link has more potential story details. Six TV Stars Shortlisted for Captain America: The Internet is buzzing today over the shortlist of six names said to be up for the title role in Marvel’s The First Avenger: Captain America. The names listed are John Krasinski (“The Office”), Michael Cassidy (“Smallvile”), Patrick Fluger (“The 4400”), Scott Porter (“Friday Night Lights”), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”). Joe Johnston (The Wolfman) is directing for Paramount Pictures with a planned release date of July 22, 2011. The studio has put the actors on 30-day holds during the testing process. [Heat Vision]

Rourke to Play Conan’s Father: Sorry, can’t get too excited about this film, but word is Mickey Rourke will play Corin, Conan’s father in Conan for Lionsgate and director Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder). Jason Momoa is set to play the title character in the return to Robert E. Howard’s story of the barbarian warrior that put Arnold Schwarzenegger on the acting map. The story sees Conan embark on a quest to avenge the slaughter of his people including his father, Corin. [Heat Vision / LatinoReview (from January)]

Rourke Also Up for King of Gods: Yesterday Freida Pinto was announced as joining the cast of Tarsem Singh’s War of the Gods as the oracle priestess Phaedra. Today, Rourke is reportedly up for the role of King Hyperion, the ruler of Ancient Greece who does battle with the divines. The film, as I mentioned yesterday, follows the battles waged by Theseus (Henry Cavill), a warrior from Greek mythology, who leads a fight against the imprisoned titans in a story where gods fight alongside mortals. Phaedra joins Theseus on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting. The film begins shooting on April 7th, while the above announcement of Rourke’s turn in Conan begins in late March. Depending on the size of the two roles he may have to choose between them. [Deadline]
