Tonight the Screen Actors Guild awarded the acting world for their 2009 contributions with the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards and Inglourious Basterds was the big winner of the night taking home the prized Best Ensemble as well as chalked up another win for Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor. The biggest surprise and only category that was really up in the air, however, was Best Actress. The question was whether the award would land in the arms of Meryl Streep or Sandra Bullock and to my personal surprise Bullock went home the recipient which means her chances of winning the Oscar have now sky rocketed.
There were no other surprises as Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for Crazy Heart and Mo’Nique won Best Supporting Actress for Precious. Bridges, Mo’Nique and Waltz have pretty much already assured themselves of an Oscar win, but that Best Actress category still remains something of a mystery.
For much of the year Carey Mulligan (An Education) was the perceived winner while the end of the year critics kudos lauded Streep while Bullock quietly inched forward in line. Now Bullock has taken home the Golden Globe and edged out Streep at the SAGs while Mulligan has gone home empty-handed at both. Perhaps Mulligan can earn a BAFTA award from her Blighty brethren, but it appears the Oscars are down to a race between Streep and Bullock and Bullock currently has the edge with very little else ahead of us to give Streep any additional momentum.
However, I’ll save further Oscar prediction chatter for later next week and simply give you the results from tonight’s SAG Awards. You can read my live blog of the even here if you wish and browse the complete history of the SAG Awards here. But just below is everything from tonight with the television awards on the second page.
