New Pictures: ‘Tron Legacy,’ ‘The Runaways,’ Cheshire Cat Progression and More

I was considering doing a new post to point out the latest pictures on the site yesterday for those of you that don’t frequent the movie stills homepage or notice the images next to the articles in the right-hand column, but there just wasn’t quite enough to promote. Today’s a bit different. I just added 21 new images from three upcoming films I’m sure several of you will be interested in.

First off, here’s a list of the films with a brief description of what’s new followed by four Cheshire Cat progression stills showing how the furry feline was created for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

Always remember, all links in this post open in a new tab or browser window so you can easily close that window and return to this article and continue browsing the rest of the images.

  • The Runaways (10 new pictures from the Kristen Stewart/Dakota Fanning flick)
  • Alice in Wonderland (New character pics and the Cheshire Cat progression)
  • Tron Legacy (A new piece of banner art previewed above)
  • Season of the Witch (5 new stills from the Nic Cage fantasy)
  • Legion (23 image full gallery for the film out today)
  • Dear John (27 total pictures from the Channing Tatum/Amanda Seyfried romance)
  • The Ghost Writer (First look at the poster for Polanski’s latest)
  • She’s Out of My League (First look at the poster for the teenage rom-com)
  • Date Night (First look at the art for the Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy)
  • MacGruber (4 new pics from the “SNL” spin-off)
  • Kick-Ass (A splashy new poster for the real-life superhero flick)

Now, here are four images featuring a four-phase progression of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. You can get larger looks at each in the gallery right here and there is a new Mad Hatter featurette I recently added right here.

Begins with a storyboard sketch, using an assemblage of low-resolution character stills.

The scene moves to animation, where the character is dropped into a low-resolution environment — the images are kept low-res to allow Imageworks’ animators to create the Cat’s performance without having a lot of data to manipulate.

The biggest challenge is to create a realistic cat that can generate the trademark exaggerated grin. Here, the all-important hair has been added, ensuring it behaves as it should, where it should be, with the Cat now curled on his limb.

Here, final lighting is added, along with a full-resolution environment behind the Cat, including the flora and atmosphere added for visual effect.

Remember, you can stay up-to-date with all the latest stills added to RopeofSilicon at the Movie Stills Homepage or at the site homepage, both of which are updated every day.
