Sam Raimi Signs On To Direct ‘World of Warcraft’

Variety is reporting Sam Raimi has signed on to direct a film adaptation of Blizzard’s popular videogame “World of Warcraft” for Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures and The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven in the mix. The film is currently positioned to be Raimi’s follow-up to Spider-Man 4, which is expected to get underway next year for a May 6, 2011 release. Raimi is expected to supervise the development of Warcraft while filming Spider-Man 4.

“World of Warcraft” is an online role-playing fantasy game chronicling a 25 year struggle between the Alliance (humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves) and the Horde (orcs, tauren, trolls, and undead). The game has a huge following and requires a monthly fee for gamers to play. The game’s most recent expansion, “Wrath of the Lich King,” sold more than 2.8 million copies in the first day of release and more than 4 million its first month.

There is no word of writers or where they intend to take the story, and as someone that has never played the game and only remembers the most recent Ozzy Osbourne commercials for the game I have nothing more to say. Perhaps some of you that have played the game can enlighten the rest of us in the comments.
