Trailer for Niki Caro’s ‘The Vintner’s Luck’

Niki Caro’s The Vintner’s Luck will have its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and now a trailer for the romantic drama has found its way online and I must say I’m not particularly moved by it.

The film features an impressive cast made up of Vera Farmiga, Gaspard Ulliel, Keisha Castle-Hughes and Jeremie Renier telling the story of a peasant wine-maker (Renier) in 19th century France and his life-long relationship with an angel (Ulliel), as they grapple with the sensual, the sacred and the profane in search of the perfect vintage.

Caro made a big splash in 2002 with the impressive Oscar-nominated feature Whale Rider which earned Castle-Hughes an Oscar nomination. She followed that up with North Country, which I thought was a pretty good flick, but it didn’t really interest audiences much at all. Vintner’s Luck is her first film in four years and perhaps it has much more to it than this trailer offers and I am sure we will find out once it finally screens at TIFF. For now, give the preview a watch and let me know what you think in the comments.
