20 Most Anticipated Movies Still to Come In 2009

The first trailer for this one depressed the hell out of me as it made the film look like a generic end-of-the-world thriller. However, word is that was exactly the intention and the film is actually much different than what was offered in the marketing. Fans of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel have been looking forward to this one for a long time now and it appears October will have us waiting no longer.

Talk about a film that went from an “Oh yeah, I want to see that one” kind of film to an absolute must see following that spectacular first trailer (watch below). Damon playing a doofus working with the FBI as a whistleblower and directed by Soderbergh makes this one an easy contender for most anticipated. It also proves how great October has a chance at being this year.

It’s a Quentin Tarantino movie and I have heard there is plenty of talking, two things that instantly have my attention. The fact it stars Brad Pitt and the lovely Diane Kruger is just icing on the cake.

I think everyone that covers movies is anticipating this one and I may be the only one that doesn’t consider it the most anticipated film of the second half of the year, but the promise of ground-breaking special effects and 3D aren’t enough to sell me as much as much as story and performance is, which is why my #1 is what it is.

The source material, the cast, the director and that first trailer make Nine a no-brainer choice as my most anticipated film for the last half of 2009. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson and Stacy Ferguson and is being directed by Chicago helmer Rob Marshall as a musical adaptation of Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2. Just thinking about it makes me wish it was November already.

So there you have it. Of course there are films that will undoubtedly impress me more than probably half of these movies, but those are the unexpected gems that come out of nowhere. I also don’t have Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life listed as it is still without a release date, Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air could be great, Precious has already received plenty of acclaim, An Education has huge buzz building and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus could end up being the best film of the year. However, I’m just not anticipating those films as much as these others even though — as I am typing this — I am regretting not including Tree of Life. I really do want to see that one, but is Summit ever going to give us any idea of when it will hit theaters?

So, how about you? What are you looking forward to? What’s your most anticipated left this year? Is everyone looking forward to Avatar like the rest of the online community or has something else caught your eye?
