YOU VOTE: Road to Oscar Noms – The Supporting Categories

Since September 1, 2008 I have been tracking this year’s crop of Oscar contenders in “The Contenders” section, and since that time many people have followed along, added their opinions and we have managed to have some great discussions about last year’s films and performances. On Wednesday I will be publishing my last list of Oscar nomination predictions before the nominees are announced on Thursday, January 22 and until that time I felt we should take a final look — together — at the acting, directing and picture categories and get your opinion on just who you think will be nominated in each category.

Today we begin with Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress and over the next couple of days we will look at Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture, each time allowing you to vote on who you think (not who you want) will be nominated for each category. RopeofSilicon users didn’t do too bad predicting the Golden Globe winners getting 10 out of 14 correct, I can only assume you will be just as good at predicting the Oscars.

My first predictions, posted on November 20, looked like this for the Supporting Categories:

Supporting Actor Supporting Actress
  1. Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
  2. Josh Brolin (Milk)
  3. Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
  4. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire)
  5. Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder)
  1. Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)
  2. Viola Davis (Doubt)
  3. Elsa Zylberstein (I’ve Love You So Long)
  4. Rosemarie Dewitt (Rachel Getting Married)
  5. Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)

My most recent predictions look like this:

Supporting Actor Supporting Actress
  1. Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)
  2. Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt)
  3. Josh Brolin (Milk)
  4. Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder)
  5. Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road)
  1. Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)
  2. Kate Winslet (The Reader)
  3. Viola Davis (Doubt)
  4. Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)
  5. Amy Adams (Doubt)

There hasn’t been a whole lot of movement in either category with only three new names added to the two lists in total. Of the names included on the lists above I believe only Eddie Marson (Happy-Go-Lucky) and Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) stand a chance at actually getting an Oscar nomination even though Tom Cruise (Tropic Thunder) and Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) were nominated for Golden Globes. I think many will agree with me when I say Crusie stands no chance at an Oscar nom and if Fiennes were to be considered for any of his 2008 performances it would be as a supporting actor in In Bruges. Therefore I think we have our list of possible nominees and it is up to us to figure out who the final five will be.

Now… It’s your turn…

PREDICT THE OSCAR NOMINEES!

PLEASE SELECT FIVE NAMES IN EACH POLL
REMEMBER: This is for who you THINK will be nominated and NOT who you want to be nominated.

If you vote "Other" please add your comments below as doing so really does nothing for the poll

unless we know who you are thinking about.

The voting ends on January 22 at 2 AM, the nominees are announced shortly thereafter. You can vote on the other topline categories using the links below:
