Does James Cameron’s Early Opinion of ‘Terminator 4’ Matter?

Early on, before Terminator Salvation began filming McG alluded to the fact that James Cameron, director of The Terminator and Terminator 2, had given the film his blessing and approved of it. It was reported McG cast star Sam Worthington in the film based on Cameron’s recommendation after working with Worthington on Avatar. However, anything having to do with Cameron was thrown out the window when fanboys received word from an interview in the National Post in which Cameron said:

“It could be a big steaming pile or it could be brilliant. Sam Worthington is in the Avatar and the new Terminator and he likes the script, but I never saw it. There was no blessing involved.”

With that quote out there I was surprised to see more fanboys grasp on to an Ain’t It Cool News interview with Cameron when he reiterated the point that he hadn’t “seen a foot of film” outside of the trailer and based on that he has “zero basis for supporting or dissing the film”. Sounds reasonable.

He continued saying, “In fact, it might be very good, an opinion based solely on what Sam Worthington has shared with me. He’s nobody’s fool when it comes to material, and has absolutely the lowest bullshit quotient of anyone I know, and he has repeatedly told me that he reckons the film is going to be good.”

Personally I read all of this and say, “Who cares?” But I am smarter than that, because I know a legion of sci-fi/Terminator fans out there care and even though I am not one of them I can respect that. However, I wonder if anyone is interested in Cameron’s non-opinion, or even his speculation based on a conversation with Sam Worthington? If you are interested you can go right here and read all of AICN’s report. If not, join the club, nice to meetcha.
