Box-Office Wrap-Up: Feb. 29 – Mar. 2, 2008

What a beating. As B-Luv has already mentioned New Line just can’t win. I felt bad for a second and then I remembered Be Kind Rewing and Shoot ‘Em Up. All of a sudden I was happy to see New Line go. Strange.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Five Weeks In A Row
That’s a beating. My original projections had this at half of Old School‘s opening. But then I looked around and realized nothing was out so I upped it seven million. So I figured people would go by default. Wrong!
Result: 15.3 million (My rank: #1, $9.6m off)
This movie actually did benefit from nothing else being released though, a 43% drop is not indicative of its quality. They really cashed in on the PG-13 rating in my opinion.
Result: 13.0 million (My rank: #2, $1m off)
Damn it. I overestimated the Best Picture win for No Country. I thought that (combined with the theater expansion) would shoot it to the top. Lesson: No one cares about The Oscars anymore.
Result: 8.7 million (My rank: #4, Dead On)
Well then. Clearly Scar-Jo and Portman have more fans than I thought. I just find it odd that those fans would sit through a period piece melodrama. My guess is this one sinks like our economy next weekend.
Result: 8.3 million (My rank: #7, $3.2m off)
See what’s going on here? The top dog (Semi-Pro) was so weak that it left tons of cash left over for these bottom feeders.
Result: 7.6 million (My rank: #5, $1.3m off)
I haven’t figured out yet if stuff like this actually happens. Should I be waiting on a text message so I can go dance it out? I’m ready, willing, and able. Well, ready and able at least.
Result: 5.7 million (My rank: #6, $0.6m off)
No movie in the top ten dropped more than 43%. It pays to be released when nothing is out.
Result: 4.7 million (My rank: #9, $1.4m off)
I’ve got this idea for a movie where I take an attractive actress and make her look disfigured. I’m doing that because it’s “artsy.” Genius, right? Can’t miss, eh? Ladies and gents, I’ve just given you insight into an actual Hollywood conversation.
Result: 4.0 million (My rank: #8, $1.1m off)
The good news is that I just received the DVD to review. The bad news is that doesn’t help my prediction look any better.
Result: 4.0 million (My rank: #3, $5.7m off)
10. Juno
This is the last official week we’ve got to deal with Juno. Thirteen weeks later our long national nightmare is over!
Result: 3.3 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
