Okay, I think it is about time to give up on G.I. Joe. Have you seen this cast of misfits director Stephen Sommers has put together? Earlier today we learned via Ain’t It Cool News (confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter) that Channing Tatum is most likely going to be cast as Duke, the leader of the Joes, and now IESB tells us that Arnold Vosloo, the dude that played Imhotep in Sommer’s Mummy films, will be taking on the role of Zartan.
Gimme a break. This cast now looks like a crew of “who the hell is that?” Tatum and Vosloo join Sienna Miller (The Baroness), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Heavy Duty), Said Taghmaoui (Breaker), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Rex) and Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow). Seriously? This is the best you could do Stephen?
The film is set to hit theaters on August 7, 2009 and it looks like instead of taking a chance at making a gritty and intense film Sommers opted to continue his Mummy ways and go for the over-the-top action adventure.
I will admit I don’t mind that idea all that much as the first two Mummy films have grown on me, but it would have been a lot of fun seeing the ‘Joe’ franchise treated with a real approach with a sense of grit and intensity rather than corny one-liners and a relatively cheap set of stars.
