Last year there were a few pics that were battling it out for top honors. The Departed bagged the Oscar, Babel and Dreamgirls took home the Globes and Little Miss Sunshine sailed home with the SAG Award and it looks like 2007 is going to be just as tight. Only a few hours ago I posted the nominees for the 18th Spirit Awards and hot on the heels is the Independent Feature Project handing out the 17th Gothan Awards.
I’m Not There led the way at the independent Spirit Awards with four noms but at the Gothams it was Into the Wild taking home top prize, while Talk to Me and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead shared the ensemble cast award.
Ellen Page was awarded the breakthrough actor award for her role in Juno, to which I can only assume no one on the small jury over there saw Hard Candy or X-Men 3. I gotta say that Page had pretty much already broken through with Hard Candy, and once you get cast in a superhero blockbuster you have pretty much made it. Hell, Jason Reitman told me he cast Page because of her performance in Hard Candy. Page is great in Juno, but a breakthrough award should have gone elsewhere.
Breakthrough director went to Craig Zobel who helmed Great World of Sound, a film I have never heard of, and the top doc award was given to Michael Moore’s Sicko.
Finaly the “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You” award went to Frownland. Yay!
