What a strange weekend. A movie that didn’t debut #1 (Bee Movie) grabbed #1 from one that did (American Gangster). This was probably a result of the holiday weekend, with kids being off on Monday, but it doesn’t explain the demise of the PG rated Fred Claus even so. Let’s break this thing down!
#1 movie predicted correctly: Zero Week In A Row
1. Bee Movie
I had it dropping 53%. Instead it dropped 32%. In my defense no one else saw this coming either, and this was probably a case of Bee Movie not seeming as terrible as Fred Claus to the giant family dollar that was out there this weekend.
Result: $26.0 million (My rank: #3, $8.1m off)
This prediction was a beautiful thing. Not much to say other than I missed the titles around it – but I’m dialed in on the public’s view of American Gangster.
Result: $24.3 million (My rank: #1, $.1m off)
3. Fred Claus
Again, well within striking distance, the people truly didn’t want to see it all that much. If I’m going to own up to one mistake it would be the $8m or so family dollars I misplaced. That’s around a million extra people out there rolling around unaccounted for. No wonder homeland defense is so tricky!
Result: $19.2 million (My rank: #2, $2.2m off)
No one wanted to see this. Can you blame them? The trailers might as well have said “Hey, come here and let us preach to you!” I’m not saying that’s what the movie was, but that’s certainly how it came off. Putting Tom Cruise in a trailer saying “Do you want to win the war on terror?” was simply suicide.
Result: $6.7 million (My rank: #4, $1.6m off)
I’d guess this got a bit of family dollar help too so let’s round my total missed families up to a clean 1.1 million persons.
Result: $5.8 million (My rank: #5, $1.0m off)
6. Saw IV
This came out on top for the horror dollar as predicted. It’s ambling towards that $100m total, but it will still finish way short of Saw III, especially domestically.
Result: $5.0 million (My rank: #6, $.9m off)
We’re nearing two months straight of talking about this film and I for one don’t want to take it anymore.
Result: $2.4 million (My rank: #8, $.3m off)
8. P2
Murdered. No awareness at all of the title. Plus strong competition. Really, this was a “how to” class on “let’s make no money with our movie.”
Result: $2.2 million (My rank: #7, $1.6m off)
They’ve got the budget listed as $30m. Let’s say the profit for the studios right now is about $21m. If they sell anything over 500k DVDs they are in. Just get it out in time for Christmas boys!
Result: $2.1 million (My rank: #10, $.2m off)
10. Martian Child
Aww man, the horrorfest only cleared half a million? That’s like 20 people. One impressive note about a title not in the top ten, No Country for Old Men made $42k per screen, or six times the amount of Bee Movie. Hopefully it expands to an area near you this Friday.
Result: $1.7 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
