Are you wondering why the late night talk shows are in rerun? Why Fox’s “24” and “Family Guy” are looking at a bit of trouble? Why NBC shutdown production of “The Office” on Wednesday?
Well, I have been pretty much quiet on the strike since it began this past Monday, but a great little video has come to my attention that lays it all out on the line and explains to everyone what is going on. I get the feeling that once you have watched it, if you held any ill-will toward the writers it will all be lost.
The chances this strike ends swiftly is very slim. “Lost’s” Damon Lindeloff was quoted in Variety saying, “People don’t give something for nothing… If the guild is gonna make any strides in new media, we’re going to have to suffer a lot.”
The bigger issue for the studios is that if they agree to the WGA’s terms they are going to be faced with expecting SAG and DGA members very soon and will most likely have to give up the same if not more. I get the feeling that the AMPTP is looking at it in those terms as negotiator Nicholas Counter has written, “No further movement is possible to close the gap between [producers and writers] so long as their DVD proposal remains on the table.”
Fat chance Nick, this is the reason people are now speculating this strike may last as long as eight months, which is when the actors will jump on board. How nice is award season going to be as a battling Hollywood sits down to pat each on the back, while they are cursing each other out once they turn around.
