‘Star Trek’ Has Its Captain Pike

I have got to wonder if the new Star Trek film is simply going to feature a ton of people all up against Eric Bana and a gang of unknown droogs as one more name has been added to the good guys side as Bruce Greenwood is set to play Christopher Pike, the Starship Enterprise’s first captain.

The character of Captain Pike plays an interesting role in the “Star Trek” lore as he was originally played by Jeffrey Hunter in an unaired pilot episode of the classic television show. The pilot was rejected by CBS, but not all of the footage was lost and Pike and the early footage was later woven back into the series as flashback material in the two-part episode “The Menagerie” which recently made limited rounds in theaters. You can also find the original pilot episode, called “The Cage”, on the third season DVD collection.

J.J. Abrams is directing the franchise reboot, which was supposedly going to begin filming yesterday although The Hollywood Reporter doesn’t mention any specific filming dates outside of saying it will start this month.

Greenwood can be seen in the upcoming films I’m Not There and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
