Box-Office Wrap-Up: Nov. 2 – Nov. 4

Glory be, I was on point this weekend. The nation was a tiny bit fatigued with Jerry Seinfeld… but they were ready to buy stock in ‘Zel and company in a big way. Let’s break this thing down before the Colts-Pats game starts!
#1 movie predicted correctly: Three Weeks In A Row
That there is less than a ten percent variance. It’s also a great opening weekend for an R Rated flick – Not Matrix level but still pretty impressive given they were dealing with a family film on their heels.
Result: $46.0 million (My rank: #1, $3.9m off)
Another less than ten percent variance. Man, I’m good. This overperformed against my projection but it still looking good for a profitable run (so long as you don’t count the marketing budget). Hopefully now Jerry can take a nice long break so he doesn’t have to beat on poor Larry King any more.
Result: $39.1 million (My rank: #2, $3.4m off)
Okay, okay, that’s like a twelve percent variance, I’m a failure. This went down 65 percent, proving once again the horror crowd is fanatical… but not enormous.
Result: $11.0 million (My rank: #3, $1.3m off)
Wow, only a 30 percent fall in week two? Admirable. It probably helped to be the only PG-13 drama in a sea of kid’s films and R rated fare.
Result: $8.1 million (My rank: #5, $1.8m off)
Where is Martian Child? Waaaay off here. It only bled in the 40 percent range, I had it much worse off. I think that means it’s better than Saw IV but I’m sure people who have actually seen them both would be better equipped to judge.
Result: $4.0 million (My rank: #8, $1.1m off)
$87m overall, sitting pretty. I watched The Rundown last night to further secure my opinion that The Rock needs to stick with action films. I guess if I wanted him in more family films I would have watched The Scorpion King, eh?
Result: $3.8 million (My rank: #6, $.5m off)
What happened? The wheels fell off. They just murdered this film, New Line should be put on trial for this. Why not release it November 30th? It would have made at least $8m on a soft weekend like that. Bad work here guys.
Result: $3.6 million (My rank: #4, $3.7m off)
Tons o’ individual Oscar buzz here, Swinton and Tom Wilkinson included. The movie was good, but I think both Tilda and Tom could have been played by just about anybody. Clooney I could see though.
Result: $2.9 million (My rank: #7, $.2m off)
This will be the last weekend for good ol’ Tyler, he will be missed. No, not really, it just felt like something you’re supposed to say. I’m sure his feelings won’t be too hurt though, he’s got 50 million reasons (this film topped $50m this weekend) to keep making movies.
Result: $2.7 million (My rank: #10, $.8m off)
The wonderful thing about this weekend is that I had all ten in the top ten. Tim Burton didn’t screw me over. Happy days are here again!
Result: $2.4 million (My rank: #9, $.2m off)
