I can only assume, even though Coming Soon is reporting that with Point Break 2 it will pick up where the original left off and we will find out if Patrick Swayze‘s character Bodhi really died in that big ass wave or not, that Swayze and Keanu Reeves aren’t coming back for the follow-up. This also leads me to believe that Bodhi is in fact dead, which ain’t much of a revelation at the beginning of your film if that is the case.
The news being reported by Coming Soon is that Point Break 2 will indeed begin filming mid-2008 in Southeast Asia and was written and will be directed by Peter Iliff, who also wrote the first movie. The new flick will be budgeted at $20-30 million.
The story will revolve around an ex-professional surfer who enlists in the US Navy and is recruited to track down a criminal gang based in Southeast Asia.
Looking at the whole package, the budget isn’t too bad and I can even get on board with the story, but I am just wondering if it really needs to be called Point Break 2. If Reeves and Swayze aren’t coming back (I am assuming they aren’t) then what is the point? I don’t know about you, but I always assumed Bodhi died in that wave, and even if he didn’t I thought his story was pretty much over, so if he was to turn out to be the leader of a criminal gang in Southeast Asia that would be one hell of a terrible plot twist.
For $20-30 million it sounds like they are looking for something more than a direct-to-video release so this one could get interesting. With a story like this it really depends on the cast, and I am interested to see who they dig up. If you need a reminder, the final scene is posted below, you tell me… did Bodhi die?
