Van Peebles Directing ‘The Uniter’

Yup, this is a Mario Van Peebles story, I still have the HD DVD for Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power sitting on my counter to be watched, but I will be damned if I can remember the last time I saw him in a movie. Looking back over his career it must have been the director’s cut of Ali in which he played Malcolm X, prior to that, it was all the way back in 1991 with New Jack City. Guess what though, he keeps on working and apparently he has a sci-fi project he has been trying to get off the ground for six years ready to get going called The Uniter. Six years eh? Man, it must be amazing!

Peebles directed a couple of episodes of FX’s “Damages” and his last moderately notable feature was Baadasssss! in 2003, which I understand wasn’t terrible, but I never happened to check it out.

As for The Uniter, Peebles also wrote the screenplay, which chronicles the journey of a political fugitive who escapes from the future back to the present to teach a 13-year-old how to use his powers to unite the warring factions of the world before it’s too late for planet Earth. Inspiration for the tale came from the combo of his travels in India and the mythology of the Aztec calendar terminating in 2012.

Hope is to begin shooting in January.
