UPDATE: CHUD.com received some news as to why Fox might not be there saying, “I have received a couple of emails from Fox insiders who have explained to me what happened with Fox at Comic Con this year. What I’ve been told is that after last year’s Borat presentation, which had that scene of Borat and friend fighting in the nude, relations between San Diego Comic Con and Fox were strained. Says one of my scoopers:
They told Fox that there was absolutely to be no R rated materials during the presentations. The trouble with that is that all of the film’s on Fox’s slate are R rated, with Aliens Vs. Predator finishing up a red band trailer. (I’m not sure about Jumper’s rating, but in typical Liman fashion that film has a long way to go before the editors can make sense of it.) Anyway they said the cost of a couple hundred grand just wasn’t worth it when they could just release all the stuff on the internet.”
If that is the case, it is just too bad, because fans of movies such as Aliens vs. Predator especially would have eaten that up.
I am not sure what is going on over at 20th Century Fox, but as I was making plans to interview David Cunningham (Director)
Ian McShane and Gregory Smith for The Dark is Rising I was sent an email telling me that “Fox Walden will no longer be going to Comic Con.”
My mind began to swirl a bit and I was wondering, does that mean that all of Fox or just Fox Walden? You see Fox is now 20th Century Fox, Fox Walden and Fox Atomic. Between Fox Walden and 20th Century Fox we were expecting to see footage from Jumper, Aliens vs. Predator, Hitman, Babylon, A.D., The Dark Is Rising and City of Ember. Now, thanks to an article posted at the LA Times we learn that 20th Century Fox has also pulled out of Comic Con leaving only Fox Atomic around.
The LA Times says that Fox Atomic, the studio’s youth-oriented genre division, still plans to hold raffles and giveaways around the Kevin Bacon film Death Sentence and the Rainn Wilson picture The Rocker.
David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s director of marketing and public relations was quoted by the LA Times saying, “Every major studio usually has a presence at Comic-Con so for Fox to pull out a week before is very unusual… We’re still going back and forth. We have in excess of 350 hours of programming so scheduling is like a giant Rubik’s Cube. Otherwise, this year every major studio has committed to show up and participate.”
I have some things set up around Death Sentence and better shoot off a few emails!
This is a bit disappointing as I was hoping to see some good stuff from films like Jumper and Aliens vs. Predator, but I guess I will have to just wait.
