Kurt Vonnegut died last night, and though his impact on the movie world was small, his impact on me personally was something much larger.
He was pretty much my favorite writer, along with Douglas Adams, a guy whose words just made a ton of sense to me. He was all at once cynical, funny, bitter, hopeful… he encapsulated to me what a great writer should be. He made you think and he asked you to question the world around you, qualities that seem to be in short supply these days.
His books were attempted in movie form but they never quite translated. Kurt was a man who wrote simply, but with great meaning, and the big screen could never match the power his words packed.
His most famous book was Slaughterhouse-Five, which he also called “The Children’s Crusade,” and it’s the best argument against war I’ve ever read. It should be required reading for every decision maker on the planet.
Anyway, I don’t know the relevance, I just wanted to share a little of my grief on this sad day.
You’ll be missed Kurt.
