Variety is reporting that the sexy Vera Farmiga is set to star in “Boy in the Striped Pajamas” based on John Boyne’s book. Miramax picked up the rights to the tale of a German family living in the town of Auschwitz and has set Mark Herman to direct. Herman also adapted the screenplay.
The story revolves around a German family that relocates to the town of Auschwitz after the father takes a posting ordered by Hitler himself, with an unlikely friendship developing between two boys living on opposite sides of the concentration camp fence. Farmiga will play the wife and mother, who grows horrified when she begins to suspect the truth of the camp.
This is the second solely inhouse production for Miramax since its split with the Weinsteins following Ben Affleck’s directorial debut Gone, Baby, Gone, which is currently slated for a September 28 limited release.
Filming on Boy in the Striped Pajamas is expected to begin in Budapest at the end of April with Miramax eying an end-of-the-year awards run.
Farmiga will next be seen in Joshua for Fox Searchlight Pictures. That film is a psychological thriller in which a successful young Manhattan family is torn apart. For a look at nine new stills just added from that film click here.
