Okay peeps, more news on the Watchmen front. The fellow geeks over at AICN did a brief story on this kick-ass interview with 300 director Zack Snyder. Snyder spills some nice and juicy details. He says he’s cast one actor but isn’t allowed to say who yet. He also revealed that the script is 150 pages without the Tales of the Black Freighter subplot in the mix (which he reportedly is inserting back into the script). That would basically jack up the screenplay another 20 or so pages making this a possible 3-hour monster. Snyder admits, however, that is he isn’t sure Warner Bros. wants a Lord of the Rings-type endeavor. He also states the film will be rated-R and that he “has a part for Gerry” (Gerard Butler).
If Butler comes aboard (he may be the secret guy that is already cast), could this be our Rorschach? I always imagined another actor in the vein of Ed Norton in the role but it wouldn’t be the first time Butler had to don a mask (he did the same in Phantom of the Opera). I can see Butler playing the Comedian, though I’m not sure how much of his character will make it into the script.
You can watch the entire interview right here. It’s pretty good stuff. I especially like the fact that he takes a swipe at Ghost Rider and X-Men 3. The fact that those two films didn’t satisfy him is a good sign for us all.
With 300 hauling in another solid $30 mil in its second week, the prospects of a great Watchmen only increase. I’ll always be a little skeptical that this project will actually happen since it’s failed to get off the ground so many times, but we’ll be “watching” this one very closely here at RopeofSilicon.
