UPDATED: Daily Variety has just posted word that everything Murdoch said was actually not true! Gasp! Here is what the trade had to say:
Sources close to Cohen said there was no deal on the table for “Borat 2,” and a News Corp. spokesman told Daily Variety that Murdoch “was under the mistaken impression that we had signed a deal.”
A 20th Century Fox spokesman said, “We’re eager to work with Sacha again and we’ve had casual discussions about a sequel, which we’d love to do, but at this point it remains too preliminary to discuss.”
Below you will see the initial article.
Even if you are 115 years old I am sure you have seen Borat before considering he was featured on just about every television show known to man prior to the release of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan last November. So, how will Fox create a sequel? Who knows, but according to that hot bed of movie news, Financial Times, Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp (20th Century Fox), has signed Sacha Baron Cohen to do a sequel to Borat following Bruno over at Universal Pictures.
Financial Times, the movie whiz group that they are, bring up the query that the huge popularity of Borat has led people to believe it would be hard for the character to continue to fool people into speaking to him. Hmmmm, good point FT, gimme one down low.
However, an interesting side note is that Murdoch said the reason Fox didn’t go after the Bruno feature was he wasn’t ready to outbid competitors and that Cohen “would not even show [them] the script” for the film about the gay Austrian fashion show presenter. Oh well, your loss Rupes.
