Del Toro was Asked to Direct ‘Narnia’?!?!

CNN has up a fantastic AP interview with director Guillermo del Toro where we learn that he was originally asked to direct The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. For those of you that have seen Pan’s Labyrinth, or any of del Toro’s films for that matter, know how cool that project could have been. However, he reveals that “he turned it down because, as a lapsed Catholic, he couldn’t see himself bringing Aslan the lion back to life.”

Instead he put together a fantastic film, one that is being celebrated by everyone. Instead of what Narnia is, Pan’s Labyrinth defies the norm and offers up what CNN describes as “a defiantly R-rated fairy tale.” You can only imagine what a del Toro created Narnia would have been.

The article is very good and also offers up a fabulous quote from Guillermo in which he says,

I do think there is far more an immoral position in creating a movie like ‘Free Willy,’ where I’m telling a kid, you know, ‘If you swim next to a … killer whale, she’ll become your friend.’ … No! She will eat your … guts and spit you out!

…If my child watches my movies by accident, they will not try to think the world is a safe place, which it’s not. Children should know the dangers of the world and not be neurotically isolated from them.”
