Charlize Theron‘s involvement in a feature film adaptation of Mark Richard’s novel “The Ice at the Bottom of the World” was announced way back in June of 2004 with an eye on filming Fall 2005. Obviously that didn’t happen, but it seems things are finally looking up for the little pic that could.
According to Variety Picturehouse and New Line Intl. will team with Theron’s Denver and Delilah Films to make The Ice at the Bottom of the World, a drama that Theron will star in and produce.
The film is set in the Chesapeake Bay, where a Navy captain reluctantly retires for health reasons. After years of neglecting his family while at sea, the grizzled veteran throws his dysfunctional family into chaos. Theron will play one of his daughters, who returns home a heroin addict and the single mother of a mixed-race child.
Hopefully this film won’t involve Theron packing on the pounds again, but it does seem like she won’t be showing off her beauty as a heroin addict.
Production will begin later this year. There was no word on whether or not original director Kimberly Peirce will still be helming the project.
