Back when Thomas Haden Church played Lowell on the sitcom “Wings” people weren’t even giving him a second glance. Then he had a small part in Tombstone and it wasn’t as if studios were knocking down his door for more. Now things have changed. Since Sideways things have changed, and for Church change is a good thing.
He had a small part in one of my favorite films from last year, Spanglish, he will be voicing one of the characters in Paramount Pictures’ Charlotte’s Web, he will be playing one of the villains in Spider-Man 3 and now he is joining Ice Cube in the remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, a comedy to be directed by Steve Carr for Revolution Studios.
The original was released in 1948 and starred Cary Grant and Myrna Loy as a couple who chuck their Manhattan apartment for a big house in the suburbs. The fixer-upper proves to be a nightmare.
In the new version, Ice Cube will play Mr. Blandings, the role originated by Grant. Haden Church will play Chuck, the contractor who takes on the challenge of renovating Mr. Blanding’s house.
Now I know this article is primarily focused on Church, but it would be irresponsible for me not to touch upon the fact that Ice Cube is playing a role originated by Cary Grant? Now if this isn’t a stretch I don’t know what is, then again I haven’t seen the original so Cube may fit the bill.
Shooting is scheduled to begin in May in upstate New York.
